Welcome to our blog!
Amy and Jennifer ARE Seduced by Books. We’re both in our 30’s, moms, close friends, work together, and share many of the same interests including our love of reading. Amy grew up in Maryland and has been obsessed with Vampires for as long as she can remember. Jenn grew up in Florida and loves the furry, the fey, and the fangs, in that order. Currently we are both in Orlando, FL. When we can be pulled away from books, Amy loves to bake and Jenn loves to take pictures and scrap.
We decided to create a place where we could direct friends, and acquaintances for, book suggestions/recommendations (Jenn’s been known to talk to strangers on the train while traveling in NYC). Once we started out with a simple page, we evolved from there. Now we are sharing our book reviews, fun comments, recipes, and giveaways. We try to give reviews on new releases, pre-releases, and oldies but goodies that we read, or are reading. We’re going to be adding author interviews for established and up and coming authors soon.

Scott Nicholson is here!

Scott Nicholson was nice enough to come visit us again.  This time he's here to talk about his new book, Liquid Fear, which comes out tomorrow.  I'm reading it right now, and it definitely sucked me in from the very beginning!!   I can't wait to see how it all plays out.   Anyway, enough about me - for now.  ;)   On to Scott and his post!

Liquid Fear: A drop or two will do
By Scott Nicholson

(Liquid Fear: A Mystery Thriller—Ten years after a tragic clinical trial testing a secret fear-response drug, the subjects realize the experiment never ended…available for 99 cents at Amazon, BN.com, and Smashwords)

Did you know the U.S. president has a special council that wonders how much your mind should be changed?
The council’s job is to advise on how emerging technologies and medical innovations should be used, as well as provide layers of oversight in how clinical trials are conducted. Of course, such a board can also have a hand in covering up any necessary ethical concerns that might make the government look bad.
For example, while the Germans were killing millions in concentration camps in the 1940s, the U.S. sponsored clinical trials in which Guatemalans were deliberately infected with sexually-transmitted diseases in order to test the efficacy of penicillin. True, the atrocities of genocide are exponentially more horrifying, but you could make the argument that both stem from the same moral failure—treating classes of people as less than human.
In my mystery thriller Liquid Fear, I drew on the work of the President’s Council on Bioethics (in the true spirit of ever-expanding government bureaucracy, the name has now been inflated to The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.) The board currently has 13 members, all doctors or professors.
In Liquid Fear, two of my characters serve on the council—neurobiologist Dr. Alexis Morgan and former U.S. Representative and fundamentalist Wallace Forsyth. One subplot involves their diverging views on the purpose of altering the brain to supposedly “help” people and what the moral limit might be for tinkering with the mind’s normal functions.
I’d been interested in fear response and the use of medicine to “help” people precisely because of the dangers of another person presuming to know what’s “good” for someone else. In fact, “good” and “helping” are purely subjective terms defined by the attitudes of the one doing the helping. Both scare me to death.
In my suspense thriller Liquid Fear, volunteers in a tragic clinical trial learn the experiment in fear response never ended, and 10 years later they must recreate it. I used a report published by the bioethics council called “Beyond Therapy: Biotechnology and the Pursuit of Happiness.” (You can order it yourself for free from bioethics.gov—after all, if you a U.S. taxpayer, you paid for it anyway.)
Part of the debate centers on the value of memory and whether it is merciful to chemically or even surgically wipe out “bad memories” in order to “help” someone suffering from, say, post-traumatic stress disorder. You may say, “Sure, sounds good to me,” but what happens if you erase the memory of someone whose hand was badly burned when they touched a hot stove eye? Then they haven’t learned that the stove eye can burn, and they may have to learn it all over again.
Bioethics. It’s a gray area, just like the brain. All I know is I don’t want the government making those decisions for me.
Liquid Fear. How much is enough?

Dakota Cassidy, er...Nina Blackman-Statleon's Visit (and giveaway)

As promised, we have Dakota Cassidy here today talking about the latest book she's working on for her Accidental series.  Well, actually she sent Nina!   So without further ado, I'll let Nina get to it!

 Wherein Nina Gets A Sister

Nina Blackman-Statleon here with a rant on writers and their crazy quest to keep a series going at all costs.

In some cases, it’s at my cost. Actually, now that I think about it—it’s almost always at my expense. More on that later.

First, let me introduce myself. I’m the second accidental in Dakota Cassidy’s series about women who’re accidentally bitten by all sorts of paranormal creatures. I was once a court reporter, got downsized, tried to supplement my lost income by selling Bobbie Sue Cosmetics, thus hookin’ me up with the most annoying efftard on the planet, Marty Flaherty. Dakota finally gave up on trying to get me to talk color wheels and lip plumping products to anyone in the free world who would listen, and she gave me a real job. As a dental hygienist. No. Fluoride and tartar aren’t glamorous, but it was a damn job. With bennies. No sooner was I there than I was “accidentally” (rolls eyes), bitten by a hot dude named Greg while I was just trying to do my job.

Okay, fine. The hot dude became my lifemate—but I went through some serious madassery before she was done with me and I got the guy. And I was only book 2.

So, add in the subsequent books where I’m doing all sorts of crap I wouldn’t if I had a choice. Like have friends. Shop with said friends Marty and Wanda at designer outlet malls. Hang out and hook up for lunch. Lunch I can’t even flippin’ eat. When Dakota really got the ball rolling, all of a frickin’ sudden I was meeting demons and having fireballs lobbed at my person. Then, to my utter effin’ shame, I was forced to be kind to complete strangers who’ve had a stupid “accident” like the one’s I mentioned above while I answered phone calls at this place she created titled OOPS. Out In The Open Paranormal Support. It’s a 1-800 hotline for morons who’re in paranormal crisis.

All of a sudden, I’m a paranormal crisis counselor who’s supposed to be “nurturing” when someone calls to tell me they have an oversized paw or some scales. Nurture this, I say.

To say Dakota strains credibility is like saying the tornado didn’t have a good time in the trailer park. And c’mon. What a lame premise for a bunch of books, and while I know I’m not alone in saying that (read some of this broad’s Amazon reviews), apparently, I’m in the minority. What is wrong with people?

Anyway, suffice it to say things have gone okay for her madness and she’s working on books 6 and 7 in the series right now. Book 6 is called Accidentally Dead… Again. I know, I know. She already did vampires, but here we fargin’ go again.

Anyway, this is the book where not only does she have her first ever male accident occur (his name’s Sam McLean, and okay—he’s cute. Whatthehellever). He’s bitten by a woman he thinks is just dressed up as a vampire at a Halloween party, then dumped on OOPS’ doorstep—still in his Halloween costume—his drag Halloween costume. It’s also the book where I get a sister (bleh). A half-sister, if you want to be technical, that falls on Sam during a throw down with me and is turned into a vampire, too.

And I just wanna say, I’m not skipping through fields of buttercups about it.

Dakota calls this evolution. She said nothing ever stays the same and that all of the characters and plots have to evolve. I say she’s overrated evolution, and if evolving means I have to have a whiny, mouthy, dresses like Marty, pain in the ass for a sister, screw evolution!

But as you all know, I don’t have a choice in the matter. I’m her puppet, people. Just a playa in the master plan.

So my question to all of you is, what the hell is next? These next two books only mean more asshattery for me. So for the love of God, when do we call it “end game” and quit clinging to this stupid concept? How much longer do I have to suffer for you readers and your idea of amusement?

So I’m secretly here to beg you all for a favor. Don’t tell Dakota or for sure, this next book, I’m doomed to have to do something huge like save the world as punishment for speaking out against her abuse. Heh. Maybe I’ll start my own support group. Like Characters For The Ethical Treatment Of Fiction. We’ll lodge complaints. Start a class action suit against abusive writers. Maybe we can even get that Jacob from Twilight to come and speak out against shirtlessness every twelve seconds in a movie!

I digress.

Anyway, here’s the favor—quit buyin’ her books! Please. If not for my own sanity, then for your poor eyeballs and the future of all eyeballs that might mistakenly land on her idea of “junk food for the brain.”

In essence, save a downtrodden friggin’ character, ride somebody else’s book!

Secrets and Shadows by Shannon Delany

Secrets and Shadows: A 13 to Life NovelNothing’s simple when you run with werewolves. Jess Gillmansen thinks she’s seen it all but her eyes are about to be opened to even more danger and a reality far more paranormal than she’s suspected. With Jess’s realization that the Rusakovas’ mother is still alive and imprisoned, the group’s choices become harder and trust more important. Lines are drawn and relationships change as the broken Rusakova family struggles to reunite long enough to free their mother and people who Jess always just took to be normal people show themselves to be much, much more. (courtesy of Amazon)

Book 2 in the 13 to Life series

What can I say - - other than young adult needs a new breakout genre - - this book had me on the edge of my seat.

Tension mounts as Delany does it again!  I want happiness for Jess, but I don't want the stories to end.  So as soon as you think things are falling into place, Delany hits you in a spiral.

Jess is getting walked on, over and stomped...but she keeps rolling on.  Her character grows a bit stronger throughout the book, maybe not stronger pursa, but more with it and able to react quicker.  There were a few spots in the book that I felt a little over done, but overall - since I read it in 1 day - I'd say it's a praiseworthy read!

Teen drama with grown up twists, as this bunch tries to free their mother.  There's secrets (and people hanging in the shadows, hence the name) but there is also loyalty.  I enjoy when authors take the 'teen' realm and show that not all lives are rosy - there's parent substance abuse, tragedy, physical abuse - that is battled every day.  It gives the story a realistic edge.  As Jess finds her friends and they all make choices the story is not lost.  How can it be when the Russian Mafia and CIA are involved?

Delany snaps that ending into place and leaves you burning for the next.

It Happened One Bite by Lydia Dare

It Happened One BiteHe's lost, trapped, doomed for all eternity...
Rich, titled, and undead, gentleman vampyre James Maitland, Lord Kettering, fears himself doomed to a cold and lonely existence-trapped for decades in an abandoned castle. Then, beautiful Scottish witch Blaire Lindsay arrives, and things begin to heat up considerably...
Unless he can persuade her to set him free...
Feisty Blaire Lindsay laughs off the local gossip surrounding her mother's ancestral home-stories of haunting cannot scare off this battle-born witch. But when she discovers the handsome prisoner in the bowels of the castle, Blaire has no idea that she has unleashed anything more than a man who sets her heart on fire...(courtesy of Amazon)

From werewolves to vampires - there is nothing Lydia Dare can't tackle! Reviewed here, are all of Dare's wolf stories - LOVED them!!! Easily I can say when I open one of the books, I can't put it down until it's done, and I thank my lucky stars that every few months a new one comes out, cause I would be LOST!

Enjoying all paranormal, I was anxious to see how the transition from a mostly werewolf base would develop into including vampires.  Since these books are linked with a common thread of characters, I hoped that she would tackle it and more!  Yep - That's right - I was not disappointed.

As the 5th book into the series, most of the characters have been introduced but each 'witch' has had her own story and plot to go along with it.  There's a mystery story, a back story, and a romance with paranormal twists.  Don't forget, this is historical based, so you get the 1800 England/Ireland.  Blaire is a strong battle witch - nothing slows her down.  Amazingly, she might meet her match!  There is quite a bit of action as Blaire and James battle to keep her family safe.
In the Heat of the Bite is next, July 1st can't come quick enough!

Hara's Legacy Resonance Mates by Bianca D'arc

Hara's Legacy: Resonance Mates, Book 1It's a serious game of cowboys and aliens when three psychically gifted brothers try to protect the one fragile, empathic woman who holds all their hearts against a menacing alien threat.
First in the Resonance Mates series.
Montana rancher Caleb O'Hara's precognitive abilities saved his family from an alien attack that annihilated almost everyone on Earth. Now the aliens have come to study the remnants of humanity. Caleb knows the only way to ensure the safety of his young wife, Janie, and his beloved brothers, Justin and Mick, is to keep the family together on their isolated ranch.
All three O'Hara brothers love Jane. They grew up next door to the young, empathic beauty and she stole all their hearts at one time or another, though she married Caleb. Caleb foresees the shocking truth of what they have to do in order to survive, and Caleb's visions never lie.
They'll have to come to terms with a new world, and an evolving relationship, all while finding a way to protect two newborn babies who are innocent pawns in the aliens' deadly game. Somehow, this one talented family holds the key for humanity's survival on this new, conquered world called Earth.(courtesy of Amazon)

Holy Cow!  This book is HOT - I am surprised my Kindle didn't melt!  Book 1 in a series I can only imagine heats the scifi world in ways you would never imagine.

I found D'arc first from her Brotherhood of Blood Series.  The Vampire series was short, sizzling, and solid (read it to figure out just how solid :) ).  When I found this series, I had to grab it.

I enjoy sci-fi as long as it keeps me going.  Well, this rev'd me up and never took me down.  Not only did it have *clears throat* 3 on 1 that was well written but it had a plot to go with it.  There was burst of closeness and emotion, discovery of the world after an invasion from "aliens" and then of course there was the 'ridin' and we're not talking about horses or motorcycles!

Jane definitely gets her cake and .... well you know!  I love how D'Arc displays the 3 brothers each in their own way exactly what she needs and how they have to come together in order to 'save' the world.  I wavered a little on the idea of how Jane settled with Caleb, I just thought Caleb's guilt is well needed!  I did appreciate how the story unfolds and not only with the smex, but with the idea of what's required of Justin and his twist in the whole thing.

If you are looking for hot, grab it.  If you enjoy sci-fi, jump on and enjoy the ride - pun intended

Radiant Shadows by Melissa Marr

Radiant Shadows (Wicked Lovely)Hunger for nourishment. Hunger for touch. Hunger to belong.
Half-human and half-faery, Ani is driven by her hungers. Those same cravings also attract powerful enemies and uncertain allies—including Devlin, the assassin who is brother to the faeries' High Queen. Ani and Devlin are drawn together, but as they grow closer, a larger threat imperils the whole of Faerie. Will saving the faery realm mean losing each other?(Courtesy of Amazon)
Book 4 in the Wicked Lovely series

Hands Down I have to say this is the best in the series so far.  Marr has done it again and again in just 4 books.  As Marr branches out into two characters that have been slowly coming into play, one would think they might be 'bored' with the series not being about the 'main' characters.  Ani and Devlin's story is just what the book/series needed to give it the edge.  The twists Marr is throwing into the series only give you that butterfly stomach feeling you get from the roller coaster.  We see more action in this book; more tension; more suspense.

Ani is struggling with finding her place and thus just going through the motions of doing her duty to the court.  She's special so she has to, but doesn't being special give her the niche she needs to fit it?  Or will it put her at risk?
Devlin has been living in shadows of his sister his whole life...is it time for him to do something else?

I'm hoping Darkest Mercy is on my door step when I get home, but I'm already devastated that it is the last in the series...

Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr

Fragile Eternity (Wicked Lovely, Book 3)Seth wants to be with Aislinn forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen.
Keenan stole Aislinn's mortality to make her a monarch. Now she faces challenges and enticements beyond any she'd ever imagined.
In Melissa Marr's third mesmerizing tale of Faerie, Seth and Aislinn struggle to stay true to themselves and to each other in a milieu of shadowy rules and shifting allegiances, where old friends become new enemies and one wrong move could plunge the Earth into chaos.(courtesy of Amazon)

Book 3 in the Wicked Lovely series

Coming of Books 1 and 2, I was rolling from the stimulative thrills...I had a little sputter as the book started.  I adore Seth and Keenan in the series, and I know the tension that is their relationship with Aislinn...so I was so said as it seemed Seth was a little whiny.  But as the story unfolds - WOW - I was once again enthralled...

We've met Summer, Winter and the Dark - to meet the one and only and to see the gifts given in this story.  I'm still itchy wondering where it's going. Seth is ready to fight will he ever be on equal ground?  I realized, the book had to start the way it did in order for it to end the way it does - LOL - to truly get the tension and suspense you can only see it the way Marr has penned it.

Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr

Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely (Quality))Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow.
Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life.
The tattoo does bring changes—not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .(courtesy of Amazon)
Book 2 in the Wicked Lovely series

So Marr does it again - bringing in more of the 'controversial' aspects of young adults (tattoos, piercings-which by the way I have and support) but I still love that she's keeping it real.  I love how much she researched her writing.  And I LOVE the artwork for the tattoo.  Ok, so let's talk about the book...

Leslie's trials couldn't possibly be harder for her to overcome.  When she wants change, she never knew this would be her outcome.  The darkness that is the Dark Court.  Amazing where it pulls the situation with Irial and twists the plot. And could Marr be any more real in her story?  Oh yea, what an interesting inference she brings into this book with a special relationship Irial has...Marr CONGRATS on the chances you've taken and how well you've done them!!!
KUDOS, BRAVO - TOAST to you.  Will Leslie ever be free of the darkness?  Who will be there when she needs someone?

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely (Quality))Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty—especially if they learn of her Sight—and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.
Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.
Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.
But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost—regardless of her plans or desires.
Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.(courtesy of Amazon)

I picked up this book with no pre-knowledge of the series, it just sounded and looked good!  Well, I was not disappointed.  Once again, I say - Young Adult has been and needs to be REDEFINED!  While young adult and our lead is in high school, I actually felt that she was an adult and didn’t feel like it was “twilightesque”. I enjoyed twilight, but as an author in a very busy genre, I was thrilled Marr set her bar way above and gave this book her own style.

The story base starts out strong and is riveting all the way to the last page.
Marr’s writing style is amazingly, effortless to read.  Instantly you are in the world with the characters because she has made it so life like.  Giving our ‘teens’ real issues many of them deal with every day.  Adding the historical ‘fae’ to modern times can be a delicate action, Marr masters it.  I couldn't wait to get the rest in the series as soon as I turned the last page.

Emotions and suspense at the best.  Aislinn could never have expected to choose this path for her life.  How can the story unfold, the action and magic of it all.  I love the extreme's the characters have - Seth and piercings - HELL YEAH! But then, those are the things that I'm thrilled Marr put into her writing.  Give it the real twist a good book needs!  Oh Keenan - what will happen as it goes on??

Taken by the Others by Jess Haines

Taken By The Others (H&W Investigations)Once, New York P.I. Shiarra Waynest's most pressing problem was keeping her agency afloat. Now she's dealing with two dangerous, seductive vampires who have been enemies for centuries. The only thing Max Carlyle and Alec Royce agree on is that they both want Shia - for very different reasons. Max is determined to destroy Shia for killing his progeny, while Royce's interest is a lot more personal. That's not sitting well with Shia's werewolf boyfriend, Chaz. As the feud between Max and Royce gets ever more deadly, a powerful vampire-hunting faction is urging Shia to join their side. Shia has always believed vamps were the bad guys, but she's discovering unexpected shades of grey that are about to redefine her friends, her loyalties - and even her desires.(courtesy of Amazon)

If I had 1 word to describe this book it would be Stellar!

Haines has taken H&W investigations right smack in the middle of the world of the Others.  You all should know by now, I (Jenn) LOVE me my weres!! Only Haines can give us the love triangle where I want the vamp over the were, I want to just rub up all on Royce…I love how Haines has shoved Shia into the world she fears and longs to be uninvolved with the others – yet that’s hard to do when your boyfriend is a Were and they just keep coming back for her!

Adventure and Action meet the love triangle and Shia has no choice but to mingle with Royce to survive, but she's help bent on doing things her way!  Haines' writing is all around 'on the level' she doesn't overdo the dialogue or the description and you still feel like you are right in the middle!

I have it on personal convo with Haines that we can only expect more from Chaz and Royce in book 3 Deceived by the Others.  I know I want more of Royce *wink wink* We'll have to see if Ms Haines can come visit Seduced for some 1 on 1 time with her next book!

Secrets of the Demon by Diana Rowland

Secrets of the Demon (Kara Gillian, Book 3)Homicide detective Kara Gillian has a special talent: she can sense the "arcane" in our world, and there's quite a bit of it, even in Beaulac, Louisiana. She's also a summoner of demons, and works on a task force that deals with supernatural crimes. Her partners are attractive and smart FBI agents, but they're not summoners, and they're not telling Kara why they are on this special force with her.

TO make things worse, Kara has pledged herself to one of the most powerful of demons-a Demon Lord-who helped save her partner's life, but now expects things in return. Meanwhile, she's trying to solve a string of murders that are somehow tied together by money, sex, rock music and...mud. But how can she concentrate on the case when she's not even sure who-or what-her partners are? (Courtesy of Amazon)

I am a Were/Shifter or Demon/Angel girl at heart.  I love the dark art of consorting with the demons – so Diana Rowland grabbed my attention with this series when I first saw Blood of the Demon.  Secrets of the Demon is 3rd in the series.

Mixing police with paranormal is a win for me.  Rowland does an exquisite job of giving you the hard facts of the mystery and the “CSI” investigation while spinning in her own demon summoner.  Who wouldn’t want a Demon to summon for a little naughty fun?  Add an immense sexual tension with your FBI coworker and you can’t have better success.  The most exciting thing is - the book has plot to its seduction.  Who is after Kara?  How much deeper does she need to go in the demon world?  And what does a human FBI agent have to do with demons again?  There's so much action in her books, it's great for anyone - in this book Rowland gave us so much to think about...

Keeping you coming back for more, Rowland does it again. I NEED BOOK 4

If you haven’t set your To Be Read list to include Rowland, do so now.  Mystery, Intrigue, and Hotness – easily a good read.
